These native medium to large shrubs are indigenous to the Maroondah, Manningham and Yarra Ranges council areas and are perfectly adapted to these locations. Seeds are collected by experienced and licensed collectors and grown locally, for private gardens council land and revegetation areas.

Requirements: Full to part sun. Dry soils, but will adapt to almost any situation.
Localities: Occurs throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Fast-growing shrub, dense, spreading and thorny. Good ornamental hedge or screen. Bird seed and refuge provider. Drought tolerant.
Banksia spinulosa
Common Name: Hairpin Banksia
Size: 2-4m Tall *2-5m Wide
Requirements: Full or part sun. Moist, well drained soils, tolerating dryness once established.
Localities: Few if any remnant occurrences in Maroondah. More common throughout the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Dense erect or spreading shrub. Attractive screen. Bird nectar and seed provider. Butterfly nectar and foliage provider.
Bursaria spinosa var. spinosa
Common Name: Sweet Bursaria
Size: 2-6m Tall * 2-3m Wide
Requirements: Full or partial sun. Well drained dry or moist soils.
Localities: Common throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Slender to rounded shrub or small tree. Good small screen when pruned regularly. Excellent butterfly nectar and caterpillar foliage provider. Spiney, and habitat for many small insects, making it an excellent species to encourage insectivorous birds.

Localities: Uncommon in Maroondah and Manningham, but occurring in various reserves throughout the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

Common Name: Hemp Bush

Open upright shrub. Profuse in flower but requiring pruning to maintain best form. Excellent revegetation species.

Fast growing upright shrub. Bird seed provider. Butterfly nectar provider. Excellent shelter for small birds and animals due to spiky habit. Drought tolerant.
Hedycarya angustifolia
Common Name: Austral Mulberry
Size: 3-7m Tall * 4m Wide
Requirements: Partial sun. Moist, well drained soils.
Localities: Occurs in damp valleys and hills of the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Interesting large shrub for cool damp areas. Fruit inedible to humans but eaten by native birds and animals. Stems used by aborigines for fire sticks and spears.
Kunzea ericoides

Attractive shrub, suitable for use as a screen. Tolerates hard pruning and can be shaped into a formal hedge.

Leptospermum continentale

Excellent shrub for a moist or wet position. Pruning after flowering promotes a dense habit and more flowers. Butterfly nectar provider.
Leptospermum lanigerum

Localities: Restricted occurrences in Manningham.
Very attractive large shrub from the Banksia and Grevillea family. Slow growing. Flowers (December to February) particularly well when moist during Summer.
Melaleuca ericifolia

Requirements: Full or partial sun. Moist or wet soils, tolerating drying out once established.
Localities: Common throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
A very adaptable plant that is useful in wet garden areas where it may form a dense copse. Bird and butterfly nectar provider. Responds well to pruning. Aboriginal people had many uses for this species including weapons and medicine.
Olearia lirata

Requirements: Part to full shade. Moist well drained soils.
Localities: Occurs in a few cool moist areas within Maroondah, quite common in these positions within the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
An interesting foliage plant suitable for indoor use. Berries change from green to blue over summer. They are however not pleasant tasting. Bird berry provider.
Pomanderris aspera
Common Name: Hazel Pomaderris
Size: 3-12m Tall * 2-4m Wide
Requirements: Partial or full shade. Moist, well drained soils Prefers to have cool roots.
Localities: Widespread in Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Interesting bark and flowers. Must be protected from very hot dry winds. Excellent for creek side revegetation. Prune regularly to encourge bushiness.
Pomanderris racemosa
Common Name: Cluster Pomaderris
Size: 2-5m Tall * 3m Wide.
Requirements: Full sun through to Full Shade. Well drained, dry or moist soils.
Localities: Uncommon within Maroondah and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
A good light screen. Good for areas where space is limited as growth is mostly erect. Drought tolerant once established.
Prostranthers lasianthos
Common Name: Victorian Christmas Bush
Size: 2-8m Tall * 2-5m Wide
Requirements: Full sun through to full shade. Moist, well drained soils.
Localities: Found in several areas in Maroondah, Manningham and many places within the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Spectacular tree in flower (November to January), useful as a screen. Must have protection from hot dry winds. Mulching and summer moisture are beneficial.
