These native climbers and scramblers are indigenous to Melbourne’s outer east, including Maroondah, Manningham, Yarra Ranges and surrounding council areas. They are perfectly adapted to our soils and local conditions.

Billardiera longiflora
Common Name: Purple Apple-Berry
Size: Relatively small and light
Requirements: Partial sun, moist well drained soils. Will tolerate full sun in cool areas.Localities: Found in moist areas, usually mountainous in the Yarra Ranges.
Attractive slender twining climber.
Bird nectar and berry provider.

Billardiera mutabilis

Common Name: Common Apple-Berry

Size: Variable light climber/scrambler

Requirements: Full sun through to full shade, well drained, dry to moist soils.

Localities: Widespread in various forest types throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

Soft, light climber, bushier if grown in a sunny position. Good drought and shade tolerance. Fantastic in rockeries and cottage gardens or hanging baskets!
Bird nectar and berry provider, long flowering period. Fruits edible when ripe.

Common Name: Austral Clematis

Size: Moderately vigorous climber. Can become quite large in optimal conditions.

Requirements: Full sun through to full shade, well drained, dry or moist soils, easily grown.

Localities: Common in Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

Vigorous climber, very showy. Happiest when some summer moisture is available.

Common Name: Small-Leafed Clematis
Size: Moderately vigorous climber
Requirements: Full to part sun, well drained, dry or moist soils.
Localities: Common throughout both Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Medium sized, dioecious perennial climber. Excellent showy climber for use in dry position. Fluffy seed heads are an attractive, long lasting feature.

Common Name: Love Creeper
Size: Twining climber/scrambler
Requirements: Partial shade. Well drained dry to moist soils where roots are prevented from becoming very hot.
Localities: Common in reserves throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Open, slender climber insignificant until flowering when it is spectacular.

Common Name: Twining Glycine

Size: Twining climber/scrambler

Requirements: Partial sun to full shade. Moist, well drained soils, tolerating dryness once established.

Localities: Common throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

Attractive light climber, useful for shaded areas. Much more vigorous when growing in ideal conditions. Butterfly foliage provider.

Common Name: Purple Coral Pea

Size: Variable, can develop into a medium sized climber.

Requirements: Full or partial sun. Well drained, drier soils.

Localities: Reasonably common in Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.

Very showy when in flower. Quite fast growing and drought tolerant. Useful as light screen or to cover embankments.

Pandorea pandorana

Common Name: Wonga Vine
Size: Climber/scrambler that can cover quite large areas.
Requirements: Full to partial sun. Moist, well drained soil.
Localities: Occurs throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Very showy when in flower. Prefers semi shaded position. Vigorous climber for growing amongst established trees and strong structures. Too vigorous to be grown on light structures.
