These native grasses rushes and sedges are indigenous to the Melbourne’s outer east, including Maroondah, Manningham, Yarra Ranges and surrounding council areas. They are perfectly adapted to our local soils and conditions. .

Carex fasicularis
Common Name: Tassel Sedge
Size: 0.5-1m Tall * about 1m Wide
Requirements: Partial sun. Moist to swampy soil.
Localities: Uncommon in Maroondah, but widespread in the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Coarse tufted plant with triangular stems. Excellent for waterside revegetation. A graceful tussock, tolerant of inundation and useful in erosion control.
Gahnia sieberiana
Common Name: Red-Fruited Saw Sedge
Size: 1-2m Tall * 0.5-2m Wide
Requirements: Full or partial sun. Moist soils, tolerating drier conditions when established.
Localities: Common in moist areas throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Large, attractive clumping perennial sedge. Good soil stabiliser. Bird seed feeder. Butterfly foliage provider. Tolerates wet soils.
Rytidosperma pallidum
Common Name: Red Anther Wallaby Grass
Size: Leaves to 0.3m Tall. May spread to around 1m wide with age.
Requirements: Full to partial sun. Well drained soils, tolerating dry and wet periods.
Localities: Common throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Attractive graceful grass, especially cascading over banks. Bird seed provider. Good drought tolerance, grows well under established Eucalypts.
Lomandra filiformis
Common Name: Wattle Mat-Rush
Size: 10-30cm Tall
Requirements: Full to partial sun. Well drained dry or moist soils.
Localities: Common throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Excellent long-lived plant for use in grassy areas and rockeries. Grown for form rather than flowers. Bird seed provider. Tolerant of dry shady conditions once established.
Two sub-species, one with finer foliage.
Lomandra longifolia var. longifolia
Common Name: Spiny-headed Mat-Rush
Size: 0.5-1m Tall * 0.5-1.2m Wide
Requirements: Full shade to full sun. Well drained position.
Localities: Occurs throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Large bright evergreen tussock plant. Very tough, will grow in dry shade. Excellent bird and butterfly feeder. Very easily established and drought tolerant.
Microlaena stipoides
Common Name: Weeping Grass
Size: To 30cm tall * 60cm wide.
Requirements: Full or partial sun. Moist, well drained soils.
Localities: Common throughout Maroondah, Manningham and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Perennial grass with graceful arching stems. Good lawn grass for shady and even dry conditions. Butterfly foliage provider. One of the best colonising species for regeneration of understorey.

Common Name: Purple-Sheath Tussock Grass
Size: 0.3-0.75m Tall * 1m. Stems to 1.5m
Requirements: Partial sun to full shade. Prefers moist soil.
Localities: Common in moist sites around Maroondah, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Manningham.
Excellent plant for a moist shaded site. Very useful plant for streamside erosion control. Can cut back after flowering to promote new growth. Bird seed and caterpillar foliage provider.
Poa labillardierei
Common Name: Common Tussock Grass
Size: 0.3-0.8m Tall, stems to 1.8m Tall * up to 1.3m wide
Requirements: Full or partial sun. Moist, well drained soils.
Localities: Common throughout Maroondah and the Shire of Yarra Ranges.
Its striking form makes it useful in many landscaping situations. Fast growing, vigorous grass. Can cut back or de-thatch with a metal rake after seeding to encourage new growth. Bird seed and butterfly foliage provider.
Poa sieberiana
Common Name: Tussock Grass
Size: 15-30cm Tall * 40cm wide. Flower stems to 90cm tall.
Requirements: Full to part sun. Well drained soils, tolerating dryness.
Localities: Widespread throughout Maroondah, the Shire of Yarra Ranges and Manningham.
Easily grown species, with reasonable drought tolerance. Can be established under existing eucalypts. Bird seed and butterfly foliage provider.
